Crazy Horse Cycles turned out to be little more than a garage with a small retail showroom attached—about the size of a typical muffler or oil change shop—two blocks from the water near the intersection of North Beach Street and International Speedway Blvd.
“Not much to look at from the outside,” Bruce said as he pulled the Aston to the curb and turned off the engine. “How’d you find this place?”
“A guy in Sturgis contacted me a few years ago, asking if I was interested in buying a 1936 Knucklehead,” Declan said. “I told him I wasn’t but to call if he ever came across a ’49 Porcupine.”
Bruce and Declan pushed through the glass door, and a bell tinkled somewhere in the back. Seconds later, an olive-skinned girl appeared behind the counter. She had high cheekbones, large black eyes, and dark hair pulled back in a braided ponytail. She was, without a doubt, the most stunning woman Bruce had ever laid eyes on.
“How can I help you gentlemen?” the girl asked.
“We’re here to see the E90,” Declan said.
“The E90? What makes you think we have a Porcupine?” the girl asked.
“Charlie called me,” Declan said.
“The motorcycle dealer out in Sturgis?” the girl responded, surprised. Not many people knew Charlie, and those who did were well connected.
“I’ll get my father,” the girl said.
Bruce wasn’t sure, but he thought the girl smiled at him before she disappeared through the door behind the counter and into the garage.
“You might want to put your tongue back in your mouth before she comes back,” Declan said.
“That obvious, huh?” Bruce asked.
“Obvious? You look like you’ve been struck by lightning.”
A moment later the door swung open and a man appeared. Like the girl, the man had prominent cheekbones, almond-shaped eyes, and an olive complexion. Unlike the girl, his jaw was square with a chiseled-edge, his skin was weathered with age, and his nose was flat—as if he’d been in a hundred fist fights and lost most of them.
“My name is Kajika,” the man said, holding out his hand. Bruce stepped forward and shook it. Declan didn’t.
“No last name?” Declan asked.
“No, just Kajika.”
“Sioux, I assume?” Declan said, motioning to a picture of the partially completed Crazy Horse monument hanging on the rear wall of the showroom.
“Yes, but Crazy Horse was Oglala Sioux,” Kajika said. “I am from the Lakota band.”
“I knew a Mohawk Indian once,” Declan said. “He was good with a wrench, too, when he wasn’t drunk. Which was never.”
“Dad, geez, really?” Bruce said, his eyes still on the girl standing at her father’s side.
“Yes, well, when your people came to our land, they came with Bibles, guns, and disease,” Kajika said. “Then they took our land, killed our children, and carried our women off to become their wives. And white men had the arrogance to call my people godless savages? After that kind of treatment, I would think a bit of whisky to be understandable. But none of this has to do with why you are here, does it? My daughter says you’ve come to buy the Porcupine.
